THOSE WHO SERVED

written by Mim Baughman
I didn't have much association with World War II in it's duration. However, as is often said everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I certainly do! We were visiting my Aunt Mary in Parksburg, Pa. As the war proceeded, one could not help but hear talk, radio reports and newspaper accounts of what was happening in the battles across the Atlantic. Than came the Pacific Incident at Pearl Harbor.
It wasn't until my sister, Nancy, married Jeffrey Cumm, that I met Jeff's dad, Bob Cumm, and I was recording articles in our family mini-magazine, that I started telling of Bob's experiences when the Japanese so rudely interupted "snooze time" on the Great Ship West Virginia. There will be several places where Bob's story is recorded. In the meantime, one thing led to another, and I now have six nearly completed stories on our local servicemen. There will be much more right here on this site in the future.

~~ Robert Wesley Cumm ~~ ~~ Edward Clinton Ellison ~~ ~~ Clifton M.Brubaker ~~

George Kenneth Fullam ~~~ Kenneth Miller

Lloyd George Gifford ~~~ Lee B.Stevens

These seven I have already done a brief story on them, which can be added to at any time. They will be on desplay in the Rising Sun History & Preservation Museum on the third floor of Town Hall in center square of Rising Sun. At this time the museum is open on the second Friday of each month from 1:00 till 4;00 P.M. Again the second Sunday of the month. Always from 1:00 till 4:00 P.M.

I will be doing more on several others. There are a few widows who want to give me their story on their husbands who are either too ill to do it themselves, or they are deceased. I was most impressed with the Navy Retirees who stayed in our area to make their homes. They have made some of our best citizens and those that belonged to and worked with the Fleet Reser ves. will also be featured. I will also have an extensive article on
FLEET RESERVES ASSOC. BAINBRIDGE BRANCH # 168.
